‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck Essay

‘Of Mice and Men’ is written by John Steinbeck. The novel is set in the 1930s during the great depression in California. The two protagonist characters, George and Lennie are farm workers who have a dream of one-day owning their own ranch. They find work in a ranch near Soledad, after escaping from Weed because of George’s incident. They are met by different characters on the farm that all have a dream. To be lonely means to lack friends or companionship and to feel isolated. Most of the characters are lonely and the only thing that keeps them alive is their dreams. Some of the loneliest characters they meet are Candy, an old man with only one hand, Crooks, a black cripple and Curley’s Wife, a woman who has no identity, she is lonely even though she is married. Although they are all on the ranch together, they are lonely because of who they are and their history. ‘Of Mice and Men’ is an emotional story with many different themes and characters. Steinbeck presents Curley’s wife as the only women in the ranch and because she doesn’t have a name it shows that she is not important and she is someone’s belonging. The first time you hear about Curley’s wife is when candy describes her to George. Candy uses expression such as â€Å"she got the eye† and goes on to describe her as looking at other man because of this they call her a â€Å"tart†. Through Candy’s words, we could develop an initial perception of Curley’s wife as Flirty and even promiscuous. This manipulates us by leading us into having a negative view of her. Her first appearance in the Novel focuses on her appearance. The way she acts, the way she looks and the way she speaks with others. The first sentence about her was â€Å"the rectangle of sunshine in the doorway cut off† this shows how she stands there to get attention and get noticed by the ranchers. This make us think as a reader in other way she stood in that certain place because she knows that they will look at her. Her physical appearance of â€Å"full†, â€Å"rough lips† and â€Å"wide-spaced eyes†,† Heavily made up† and â€Å"her fingernails were red† this shows how see got the natural shape on an actor. The â€Å"heavily made up† this shows that she want to make herself look attractive so the ranchers will look at her and feel love in her. The colour â€Å"red† shows that it’s a symbol of danger and on the other side the thick bright colours stands out from other things so this can make herself get noticed by others that is all she wanted. George seems to believe Candy he says to Lennie â€Å"don’t you even take a look at that bitch† this shows the feelings that George got towards Curley’s wife. She is lonely â€Å"stands there looking in† which shows she nothing to do and because of her loneliness she wanted to be loved by others so she acts like she is flirting. They say she is a â€Å"flirty† but it is the only way she knows how to get attention.

Othello vs Iago

It is a known fact that the actions someone makes throughout his/her life fashions the kind of person he/she is, however this is not always the case. Ultimately it was Othello who was in control of his own behaviour though he was highly influenced. Despite the fact that Iago had finished the deed of killing Roderigo, he was more in control of the others thoughts than actions. Together, Iago and Othello were fundamentally in charge of their lives though powerless to their thoughts and actions.Nonetheless only one can be the most responsible for the tragic events that occur in this play. Insecurities have a powerful effect on the human mind, and thats just what happened to Othello, he succumbed to his insecurities. Being a different race and a general could be said to be rare in the time period that this play took place which may have led to why Othello was reacting so irrationally. He allowed his mind to play tricks on him by latching on to anyone who had shown kindness to him during a stressful event which led to his fatal flaw: Pride.Though he loved Desdemona with all his heart, his pride seemed to be a bit more important. He would not listen to his wife because of the newfound tainted picture of her which meant to him to eliminate the one thing that would ruin his image of himself. In the end actions spoke louder than words and he gave in to the murderous ways that ago had planted in his head. With a great minds comes great responsibilities, responsibilities Iago seemed to ignore by allowing his jealousy to take over.Honest Iago truly was honest however, he was also extremely clever. He knew how to twist the thoughts of the people around him turning them into his little puppets in order to keep his hands clean. A highly effective instigator which led to the deaths of all the characters who died by manipulating the people around him. when all is said and done, it was Iago who really Influenced the actions preformed by Othello.

Point of View 1 - Essay Example Every night we were to pay tribute to the Seth in the price of blood and sweat. We receive our rest during the day, since we cannot work under the extreme heat. Sometimes they would call us into the Hall to punish us or reward us but that all depends on how well our work is done. We thought that Seth would set us free from bondage, but that was just a lie. Seth had various markings on his skin – all of it are numbers that seem cryptic to understand. One time, I happen to walk in a dark area and saw Seth approaching me. He was wearing a cloak and a long dress but that did not prevent me from seeing his sharp claws. The next thing I knew, my face was bloodied as I ran away. Seth is an evil force that hates mortal beings. I should have been warned by my friend Sebastian. Before the great inferno thousands of years ago, the world lived among millions working together; to provide a general well-being for all of its inhabitants. That is what the north is trying to accomplish, and ye t they are doing it dreadfully wrong. My friend, Sebastian, told me he had found some relics that could reveal the truth about the past. We did not understand the scriptures but their message was clear. It showed us how we could create a new paradise much like that one of the past.

MARKETING IN PRACTICE Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words

MARKETING IN PRACTICE - Essay Example Stern estimates that 1% of UK gross domestic product must be spent on tackling climate change, leading to a 25% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. If measures are not taken before then and temperatures increase by 5Â ºC, Stern warns, rising sea levels could put London underwater. The UK will implement a climate change bill, proposing a 60% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 which was highlighted by the Queen’s Speech during the state opening of parliament in November 2007. If global greenhouse gas emissions have not decreased by the end of 2015, then our chances of restraining climate change to within the two degrees " safety line diminish daily. The scientific data demands: the peaking of emissions within eight years, worldwide cuts of 60 per cent by 2030, and 80 per cent or more by 2050. Above two degrees, the possibility of crossing "tipping points" in the earths system will result in the collapse of the Amazon rainforest and the release of methane from the Siberian permafrost is higher. The prospects for carbon recycling are huge primarily through new generation clean WTE, biomass cultivation (which covers the plantation of many trees and grasses depending on local soil and weather conditions) or by directly coursing flue gases through algae cultures to generate fast growing algae by the ton (with oil, ethanol and protein for animal feed squeezed out). The result is that the carbon efficiency of the economy will continue to increase. If regulators and conservation activists convince people that they need the environmentally friendly economy, it will be a big feast for everybody from bio-tech companies to car industry for years to come. The demand for products as diverse as high efficiency ball-bearings, ‘smart meters’, low energy computer monitors, financial services and household goods is driven by climate change. Sainsbury Chief Executive Justin King stated that the market

Integration is not easy to achieve but when it is achieved, the 4 Es Essay

Integration is not easy to achieve but when it is achieved, the 4 Es and 4 Cs of IMC create the synergistic benefits of integration - Essay Example However, with lots of choices including the media’s bombardment of potential customers with the right messages, this is having no effect to the potential (Figen, 2006). An effective Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) which will unify multi-channels, synchronize communication and group together the three aspects of communications; advertisement, public relations and marketing towards relating intimately with the customers, is the only solution viable for firms to reap the benefits of marketing. This is made possible by the use of both online and offline marketing channel with complementary media to ensure consistency in the delivery of message. Sometimes even with an effective Integrated Marketing Communications program, firms need have a competitive advantage over other similar firms in the industry and should therefore include the 4E’s and the 4C’s on Integrated Marketing communications to create the synergistic benefits of integration. Broderick and Pickton (2005 28) rightfully state that â€Å"Integration is not easy to achieve but when it is achieved, the 4 E’s and 4 C’s of IMC create the synergistic benefits of integration† in this respect. The following suggestions will discuss the integration of the 4C’s and the 4E’s within IMC. The 4C’s of communication propose that integrated marketing communications should have consistency, coherence, continuity and be complementary while the 4E’s propose integrated marketing communications should be economical, efficient, enhancing and effective (Figen 34). Being economical involves using minimum resources, time and strategies necessary for effective consideration and most importantly, being cautious with money to avoid overspending. To ensure profitability for any firm, Integrated Marketing Communication should be economical. Costs incurred in running integrated marketing communication should not exceed or level with the expected returns. To

Management Paper - Assignment Example In the week four paper I identified several strategies that Auxilium Pharmaceutical could pursue. The purpose of this paper is to prepare an implementation plan for the company. A complete financial breakdown of the budget to implement the plan by segment is illustrated in Appendix A. The company must build up the image of the company and reinforce its brand value across the domestic United States marketplace. The company needs the doctors to recognize the firm’s brands as one of the best alternatives to treat Dupuytren’s contracture and hypogonadism. The company must hire a temporary workforce of pharmaceutical sales representatives for a period of six months. Each state will be allocated 100 pharmaceutical sales representatives. The goal of the program is for the pharmaceutical sales representatives to visit the offices of every doctor in the United States and to give them several samples of both drugs. As of 2008 there were 661,400 doctors in the United States (Bls, 2011). The purpose of the initiative is to create brand awareness of the firm’s products and to provide a personalized customer service to the doctors that prescribe the drugs. The cost to implement the plan is illustrated below: total employees 5000 Total hours elapse (6m) 1039 Total man hours 5,195,000 Labor cost per hour $15 Project cost $77,925,000 After the completion of the six months the company will not have to pay anymore the pharmaceutical sales representatives because their contracts will end and the company will no longer need their services. Due to the high implementation costs of the plan the company could divide the visiting doctor project in two years. The project after six months or lower and $38 million in spending would become inactive. The following fiscal year the company would fund the additional $38 million to complete the project. The company will also target the end user of the medicine, the patient. The company must increase its marketing budget a lo t in 2012. The firm’s marketing budget must be at least twice of its 2010 spending. An effective branding strategy requires a high capital investment. The firm should create a new advertising campaign to be launched on Christmas day. The commercial will be launched simultaneously on the written press, television, radio, and the internet. The written press commercial will be a reanimation of the commercial in cartoon format. The radio commercial will provide the same audio as the television commercial. The television and internet commercial are identical. The total elapse time of the commercial will be 15 seconds. The advertising campaign will be run on television and radio for 30 days. The written press will have the commercial on for a period of 30 days with an offering of the commercial once a week. The internet campaigns will be ran for 90 days. The reason the internet campaign will be run longer is due to the lower cost of internet commercials. The total budget for the pr oject is $2,000,000 million. The organization will use additional campaigns in order to raise the brand value of the firm. One of the technological tools that will be used to target specific customer profiles is the use of cellular technology advertisement. One of the advantages of cellular advertisement is that the entire population of targeted customers receives the message into their phones simultaneously. Due to the graphic and online capabilities of smartphones the company could design very appealing commercials. The commercial length should not exceed 15

Touch Screen Alarm Clock Marketing Plan Term Paper

Touch Screen Alarm Clock Marketing Plan - Term Paper Example l ensure that it successfully meets the requirements of every customer by charging reasonable price for the product range and provide features in the alarm clock accordingly. Since the business environment is becoming fierce and competitive, it has become vital for the companies to carry out a market research before launching the product in the market (Ranjhita, 2011). With the help of the research, it was found that the touch screen alarm clock has a huge potential for the new entrants and entry barriers are relatively low (Cako, 2005). The new entrants can be very challenging to deal as the competition via new entrants gets fiercer in the business market. In US, every top ranked brand is offering its products but there are some areas where people have limited access to these clocks. This limited access creates an opportunity for other organizations to market their products. The three areas identified by our company are Ohio, Florida and California; the geographic segmentation has been done to get a clear picture of the type of customers that the company will be targeting. From the analysis of the research findings, it is decided that the brand name will be â€Å"Express Alarm Clock† and it will comprise of two models on the basis of features. One model will be simple with fewer features and other will be with complicated features and it will consist of extremely high technical features. The two models are decided upon according to the needs and demands of the target market. The other aspects of the marketing plan are discussed below in detail. In order to cater the right target market, it is important that the target market is decided beforehand which will ensure that there will be certain number of consumers who would be willing to buy the product (Flink, 2011). The target market of this new touch screen Alarm Clock is as follows: Lifestyle: Depending on the life cycle stage; young children and adults who are fun-loving, adventurous and technologically savvy.

Analysis - Essay Example It is not possible to claim that one is right in doing such things in a certain way e.g. committing adultery at the right time and with the right woman. He argues that for such cowardly and unjust actions, there is no mean because what is seen to be intermediate is in fact extreme. When such actions are done, they are wrong. The reasons given by Aristotle clearly support the thesis. He shows that the choice of an action lying between good and bad is itself a bad action since it is not possible to do a bad thing in the right way. What is seen to be an intermediate or midpoint is itself a bad choice. The reasons given are plausible because the fact that a bad action is being undertaken, it remains to be bad regardless of where and how such actions are committed. For instance, there is no way of good way of being a murderer or adulterous. In real life, this passage plays an important in real life since it emphasizes on the importance of choosing the right action when faced with the choices of bad and evil. For example, the mid-point between non-murder and murder is not the right choice. The right choice in this case is non-murder. Therefore, there is no good deed that lies between bad and good. It will remain to be

Danages and their calculability Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Danages and their calculability - Research Paper Example Damages, generally, vary largely depending on the type of loss or injury sustained, the claim presented and the jurisdiction in which the claim is brought. Though the general concept of damages is well rooted in common law not all damages are, especially when considering those recoverable in securities law (Hames 101). Nevertheless damage awards are often at the center of controversy given their monetary nature and their debilitating effect. In response, congress has attempted to address these concerns by enacting several statutes limiting the monetary awards damages can afford. Nonetheless, damages play an integral part of every legal system, providing teeth to every bite civil law imposes. This paper seeks to discuss and examine the different types of fraud damages available in breach of contract, tort, and under Rule 10b-5 and how those damages are calculated. Because the rules governing damage awards very greatly on the jurisdiction they are pursued in, the aim of this paper is t o provide a general understanding of the customary rules governing common damage types. The discussion is divided in three parts. Part one will briefly discuss the nature of damages. Part two will discuss fraud damage types and calculability in three sections: compensatory damages and restitution, mitigation of damages and punitive damages. Part three will examine and analyze the damages for fraud, and their related drawbacks under tort, contract breach, and 10b-5. In the legal system, civil law has its core principles in a system that serves in the perspective of a primary source in law. Based on the Roman law’s framework, civil law was developed from Western Europe origins. The same can be contrasted with common law, which basis intellectual dependency on judge made decisional laws, that accord precedential authority to any prior court decisions. The latter is on the principle of unfairness in treating similar facts, on different occasions in a different manner. In discussi ng about these issues, calculation of damages in relation to a legal dispute is essential especially in diminution values. Diminution of values depicts a measure of value that can be termed lost as owed to circumstances causing loss. Diminutive in value is a measure on an items value prior to and subsequent to the ideal act or an omission done to create the value lost to ensure calculation of compensation changes. Relating to theories available in legal damages this type of value in mostly used for damages related to special compensations (Johnson 76). The principles of damages and their calculability Before damages can be recovered, there must be a wrong committed (M11). Even if a loss has been incurred, damages cannot be awarded absent a wrong or invasion of a legal right (M11). The objective of damages is to give the claimant compensation for the loss or injury he or she has suffered, as a result of a breach of duty or right owed to the claimant (M12). Damages in fraud are econom ic losses that include all financial and material losses, such as loss of profits incurred or loss of value. (M12). These losses on their face can be measured financially. The general purpose of damages is to award the claimant an amount of money that will put him or her in the same position had he or she not been wronged (M13). The rule however is not absolute. There are limitations where the compensation

Zara: Information Technology For Fast Fashion :: Problem, Solution, Case Study

Problem Statement: In 2003, Zara's CIO must decide whether to upgrade the retailer's IT infrastructure and capabilities. At the time of the case, the company relies on an out-of-date operating system for its store terminals and has no full-time network in place across stores. Despite these limitations, however, Zara's parent company, Inditex, has built an extraordinarily well-performing value chain that is by far the most responsive in the industry. Therefore the major problem to the company is to decide whether it has to upgrade the present system and by doing so, risking the reliability they have with the current system or to continue with the present DOS based system which will not be compatible for future changes or improvements. Analysis & Recommendation: Zara’s main strategy is the ability to respond very quickly to the demands of target customers which called for identifying trends of the customer in advance. The company has been able to identify the trends and meet the demand with the help of its autonomously organized structure and its effective value chain systems. The present system followed by Zara has been very effective and very easy to maintain, which as a result has persuaded the company to continue without any change in the present system so far. The problem that Zara faces right now is that the system that they use, P-O-S (Point of Sale terminals), runs on DOS which Microsoft does not support anymore and any hardware change in the POS terminal will not be compatible with the current POS software. Although the sense of urgency for the change may not be that high, investing in IT infrastructure is a must as MS Dos is an obsolete technology and there is no contract or guarantee from their POS terminal vendor that they will continue supplying the same terminal with out much changes in the hardware for any specific period of time, therefore change is unavoidable. The other main issue that Zara faces is that the stores don’t share inventory information electronically and hence inventory management becomes highly difficult and manual. The decision making process is based on the judgment of employees throughout the company instead of relying on a small set of decision makers; the majority of the decisions were made by store managers and as a result they placed orders for the items rather than simply accepting and displaying what headquarters decided to send them.

The Dystopia of William Gibsons Neuromancer Essay -- Neuromancer Essa

The Dystopia of the Neuromancer The Neuromancer is a world of darkness, where the society is slowly becoming corrupted. There is violence, excessive drug use, and lack of individuality, which portray this world as a disturbed and inhumaine society. The Neuromancer is an experiment to see how the society would react if the world was taken over by computers, and everyone were only concerned about themselves and their survival. Unfortunately, it is only a test, which ended up blowing up in their faces. The dystopia of the Neuromancer casts a dark shadow, which destroys the living. The violence in the Neuromancer is insaine. Constantly, there is someone dead, injured, or running away from someone else. Survival is the key element in living in this type of society. No one has time to think about others, because they are running for their own life. This is the worst society to be involved with. There are guns, knives, blood everywhere, and people crying out for help. The Neuromancer is a world of poverty, and where there is poverty, crime usually occurs. For instance, Case spend the night in a "Cheap Hotel"(19), which he implied was "the most expensive place he ever stayed in. When poverty gets to the point where something cheap is luxury, there is a problem. Case had to sleep in a coffin, a dead man's bed. It is as if he is dying inside that the society around him has gotten to this point of destruction. The "black clinic",(14) where surgery was performed to prolong the lives of humans by means of computers, litterally ripped out the human soul and replaced it w ith a machine. The human being has died, and only a machine was left to live. That is the reason Case sleeps in a coffin. His soul has died and computers have... ...o critically think. The same with this artificial intelligence. These people do their duty and move on. When the society becomes this passionless, it becomes dark and dystopic. Toward the end of the novel, the dystopia has increased. While performing surgery, the doctor took away his ability to get high off of drugs, in order to help him work better. However, now he has no escape method, because the one thing that helped him get his mind off of what is going on has been taken away from him. This artificial intelligence agency has gone too far. They control every aspect of his life. This is where dystopia is at its peak! When a world becomes the slave to cyberspace, there is a problem. No computer has the right to control human mind. Whether it is for work reason or social reasons, humans must be left to decide on their own rather than computers deciding for them.

Equal Rights for Lebanese Women Essay example -- Equal Rights Womens

Equal Rights for Lebanese Women Throughout history, women have been dominated by men, and were not given their human rights, simply because they were women. Nevertheless, starting the eighteenth century, some women started showing their dissatisfaction with their unfair conditions. They came to realize that since they were human beings, then they must have equal rights as men. In this paper, I intend to show the historical back ground of the earliest women’s movements in the world, and to state the major achievement of these movements. Finally, I would like to throw some light on the changes in the status of women in Lebanon. Women have not been sleeping when it came to their rights. However, women have not been able to anything about their rights for several reasons. For example, the role of women was to take care of the home while the husband was winning bread for the family. In addition to this, very few women could read and write, and therefore, they did not have the means to express themselves, or to start organized actions. With the rise of equality of all men and democracy by the end of the eighteenth century, the cause of women started, particularly in the year 1792 when the first feminist publication was written by Mary Wollestonecraft, a British woman who was devoted to the cause of liberating women from their chains. The famous publication was known as the vindication of the rights of women. According to this publication which is the first organized step towards women’s liberation, the aim of women’s movements would be to eliminate the sexual discrimination against women on the po litical, economic and social level, so that women would have equal rights to men (Grolier, 1). â€Å"Grolier Electronic Publishing† shows that the first problem women faced was suffrage. While men were able to vote and to participate in the political life, women were not. Therefore, the efforts were united and aimed at winning the right to vote. Consequently, in 1903, the women social and political union (WSPU) was established with its main goal as winning the right of suffrage for women. The Union was under the leadership of Emmiline Panhurst who was able to lead her fellow women in Britain in demonstrations that protested against the inequality of men. The British Public opinion was divided and many women were arrested and send to jail for their participation in... ...rticipate in very few of these activities if they do at all, and the woman is left to finish them all without regard to her need for rest (Tax, 230). In conclusion, the history of the women’s movements is a strong example on the struggle of women for centuries in their attempts to attain their freedom, humanity and equality. The struggle has not yet come to an end, and the road to success is still very long and full of challenge. Nevertheless, women will always have the hope and faith in what they are doing, because they know it is right. After all, human equality is the most basic right of all human beings, males and females. Bibliography Densemore, Dana. â€Å"On The Temptation to Be a Beautiful Object.† In Salper, Roberta ed. Fitzgerald uses his own events to play key parts in this novel. Throughout The Great Gatsby characters and events are a written reflection of Fitzgerald life making The Great Gatsby an autobiography. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul Minnesota (A Brief Life of Fitzgerald).Francis’ parents enrolled him at the Newman School in 1911 when he was 15 years old, Newman School was a prestigious Catholic prep school located in New Jersey (F. Scott Fitzgerald Bio). After graduating from Newman in 1913 Fitzgerald went to Princeton University. At Princeton he devoted himself to working hard on becoming a writer. With all of his focus on writing, he began to struggle in other classes. Around 1917 Fitzgerald was on academic prob ation and it was very unlikely for him that he would graduate so he thought it was best for him to join the Army.Fitzgerald became a second lieutenant in the infantry (A Brief Life of Fitzgerald). Fitzgerald was so convinced that he would die in the war and scared that he had not accomplished his literary dreams in time, that he quickly wrote a novel called The Romantic Egotist. The novel was very well liked by the publishing company known as Charles Scribner’s Sons, but they asked him to revise it before sending it back to them(A Brief Life of Fitzgerald). Around June 1918 Fitzgerald was stationed at Camp Sheridan, near Montgomery Alabama (A Brief Life of Fitzgerald). While he was stationed in Camp Sheridan, he met a girl named Zelda Sayre (F. Scott Fitzgerald Bio). Zelda was 18 years old and Fitzgerald eventually fell in love with her. And he would continue to pursue after her. Fitzgerald was never actually deployed into the war, because World War I ended in 1919. After bein g discharged from the army, Fitzgerald decided to move to New York City where he hoped to start a career in advertising hoping that Zelda would marry him for having a job (F. Scott Fitzgerald Bio). Although Fitzgerald wanted Zelda, he quit his job and decided to return to St.Paul to rewrite his novel. Fitzgerald really hit a breakthrough when his novel, This Side of Paradise was published in 1920 (F. Scott Fitzgerald Bio). After finally having success from his novel, Zelda finally agreed to marry Fitzgerald only after a week of the book being published. Zelda and Fitzgerald married in New York. The couple had one child, a daughter named Francis Scott Fitzgerald, who was born in 1921 (F. Scott Fitzgerald Bio). Fitzgerald quickly became famous and wealthy from his writings as he began to write more novels and short stories as the year passed.Fitzgerald became a so called, â€Å"playboy† (F. Scott Fitzgerald Bio). Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby and it was published in 1924. T he novel was closely based off most of Fitzgerald’s own life. Using his own experiences Fitzgerald was able to write his greatest novel ever. Fitzgerald shows himself throughout the book through mostly two characters; Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby. Both characters had some aspect to Fitzgerald’s life. For instance Jay Gatsby and Fitzgerald both had a lover whom they wanted to marry so badly. Nick is the vision of what Gatsby saw of the â€Å"roaring twenties†.Jay Gatsby represented Fitzgerald’s personality as a lavish partier when Fitzgerald first became wealthy. Gatsby threw great parties that everyone wanted to go to. Fitzgerald became rich just like everyone wants to be. It was not just the partying that is seen as Fitzgerald, but Fitzgerald seems to describe his own young life through Gatsby as if he was writing an autobiography. Fitzgerald went to Princeton only for a while just as Gatsby went to St. Olaf’s College only to leave the school just as Fitzgerald left Princeton.Gatsby was blinded by Daisy’s beauty just as Fitzgerald was to Zelda. Both were determined to have their women. It seemed though Fitzgerald could not accept rejection or a loss, an example in Fitzgerald’s life was that Zelda broke their engagement, because Fitzgerald was not making enough money (A Brief Life of Fitzgerald). Fitzgerald drove himself to win Zelda. Fitzgerald put his emotions into Gatsby by trying to say he would do whatever it would take to have Zelda. Gatsby got all his money from illegal activities, because he was willing to do whatever it took to have Daisy.Like Gatsby, Fitzgerald was blinded by the beauty of one women that having Zelda, as Gatsby having Daisy, was all he wanted. Gatsby represented the partying celebrity. Nick Carraway represents the other side of Fitzgeral,d as he represents the quietness the better minded version of Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald and Nick Carraway were able to see that all this materialism and partying in the â€Å"Roaring Twenties† were morally decaying, yet they were both fascinated by the lifestyle. Nick represented Fitzgerald’s true feelings of the era where life was fun and flashy, but morally wrong to him.Nick Carraway at the end of the novel decided to move back to the Midwest to escape the craziness and hyped life happening on the east coast even though he was curious about it. (Fitzgerald 176). Fitzgerald puts his true feelings into Nick. Even though the fast rich life seemed fun and exciting it was morally decaying and he misses living normally. Fitzgerald showed many signs of an autobiography, in The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald showed himself as idealized version of himself in Gatsby, doing whatever he could to have Daisy and never once thinking his plans would not work.Nick Carraway was Fitzgerald’s old self stuck in a place full of drama and morally decaying events that everyone in the party life thought as ok, because they thought they were better than everyone else. Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, shows readers that his life was put into two characters; Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway, to show the views of that era. . Off Shore Drilling Essay

Should the organisation Expand by Shore embrocate tabooturn in the U.S.? The ill-mannered anoint diligence has become prominent since mid nineteenth century. Ever since the Industrial Revolution, the development of boring methods has brought crude cover into a drastic muchovery larger extent of mass production. Petroleum is 1 of the important extracted compositions of crude crude in the U.S. Until today, it is internationally used mainly as fuels in transportation. Other uses include modify homes, gainiceing industry, and providing raw material for plastic manufacturing. The corking importance of anoint color to the body politic has light-emitting diode to the exploitation of its resources in the past century. non scarcely exploiting land resources, the g overnment is likewise beginning to exploit resources down the stairs the ocean. Off brim fossil anele production is the method of extracting crude cover colour colour from the seabed. It has been a controversial fuck in the U.S. of whether or non finish finish up land boring should be hyperboliseed. In this essay, I am comparing and differentiate the reasons wherefore virtually plenty ar supportive of get through shoot down drilling in the U.S., and why both(prenominal) concourse ar in adversary to it. I testament discuss three major aspects upon this issue the three aspects be discip pass security, economy and surround. The first reason why numerouswhat mass support bump finish shoot down drilling is that they trust that send off brim drilling leave behind not harm the environment repayable to the bulky good of engineering science. The biggest environmental issue that is oft clock times associated with off shore up drilling is inunct spills. People believe that as time is progressing, rapid promotion in engineering science pass on make it possible to demeanour off shore drilling at the safest way in order not to harm the environment. B ased on statistics by http//www.itopf.com, oil spill cases have declined over the past few decades, which prove that technology has become better. In line with the advancement of technology, a complete reco genuinely of past oil spills have been proven to be attainable. An example of such cases is the success grade of the reco real of Alaskas Prince William Sound, which wasstruck with oil spills at 1989. Moreover, heap believe that the dress of oil spills is not due to off shore drilling, however mainly due to natural seeps and petroleum transportations. A reckon proves that urban runoff and treated sewerage dump deposits 12 times more(prenominal) than petroleum into the sea than petroleum from inshore drilling.A study at Lousiana province University has excessively been conducted to prove that off shore drilling is good for shipboard soldier conduct. It is believed that oil production syllabuss cause improvements in marine life. The study suggests that there are 50 mor e times of marine life around an oil production platform than in the surrounding mud bottoms of the sea in Lousiana. It is believed that there is a correlation coefficient between the explosions of marine life with the create of oil platforms. However, in opposition to this, any(prenominal) hatful believe that off shore drilling in the U.S. do discombobulate serious environmental risks. They believe that technology advancement reduces the risks of oil spills but do not a hundred per centum guarantee its nonoccurrence in the future. Once an oil explosion occurs, the distress will be passing destructive to the environment and it will reach a point of no turning back. According to Environmental and commercial Perspectives by Ted Danson, virtually 120 one million million million gallons of oil end up in the worlds oceans ein truth social class from oil platforms, marine transportations, vessel discharges, and accidents. legion(predicate) cases of oil spills had happened in the U.S. oneness of the superior was the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaskas Prince William Sound, which caused the death of thousands of local marine creatures. e very(prenominal)where 250,000 seabirds, 2,800 sea otters, 300 harbor seals, 250 brassy eagles, up to 22 killer whales, and millions of salmon and herring eggs were killed. crude oil damages organs of marine organisms and the commodious-term personal effects may cause impairments of reproduction of these creatures, which and then may lead to extinction of nearly of the species. Moreover, jounces of oil spills on the environment are long term and are extremely difficult to recover. This is because the thick layer of oil tends to spread very quickly under the influence of wind, waves and currents. The Exxon Valdez oil spills spread approximately up to 1300 miles of theshoreline. all the same with the latest technology, the swan of removing the oil from the sea is much lazy compared to the rate of the spreading of o il. It is very exalted to have more than 15% of the chalk up spill being recovered. Oil spills occurring in regions of extreme climate, such as Alaska, are plane out exceedingly difficult to recover. It is close impossible to soak up toilsome crude oil trapped in waters covered with icebergs and sea ice. Thus, the impact will be much long lasting and at worst, irreversible.Despite the improvement in technology, off shore drilling is still highly risky because even the finest technology may fail. Once it fails, the greet to the environment is tremendous. The operation of the rig is excessively associated with the production of toxic wastes and many early(a) long lasting forms of pollution. The drilling muds pick out mercury, lead and cadmium that may hive away inside the bodies of marine organisms. In addition, some traces of this pollution may be install in seafood that people consume, therefore, creates serious health consequences for them. Next, another reason why som e people support off shore drilling is because they believe that it will fasten the field security of the state of matter. The United States is very dependent on foreign oil to construe their immense oil packs. In 2010, based on the statistics provided by U.S. part of Energy, 58.1 per centum of total oil utilisation in the U.S. is imported, and the rest is nationalally supplied. 60 six percent of global oil militia are in the transfer of shopping mall easternern regimes such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran. Oil reserves in the U.S. further account for two percent of the total reserves worldwide, yet the country is ranked the highest in the world in terms of oil demands. The U.S. reliance on antagonistic countries in the Middle East for oil, unfortunately, poses threats towards the national security of the U.S. The U.S. is sending $ euchre billion every year to oil producing countries for oil imports. The trade does not only involve in the transfer of lengthy amount of money from importers to exporters, but too proponent. Middle East countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran, which are the greatest oil exporters, are now with all the position and money.Reliance on some of the Middle East countries for oil indirectly forces the U.S. to be involved in the political conflicts misfortune in there, and reduces the U.S. ability to keep the mollification between conflicting countries in that area. Also, the U.S. has ever been entangled in political and spiritual issues with Islamic countries of the Middle East. These expose the U.S. to threats of terrorism. One of the related events was the devastating 9/11 terrorist attack. Whether or not it is a weigh of coincidence, most terrorists that have been threatening the U.S. resurrect from the Middle East. The U.S., paying billions of dollars for oil to these countries, indirectly is funding their investment in implements of war and therefore supporting terrorist organizations.Furthermore, the U.S. arm y is very dependent on oil to power and maintain its defense machines and transportations. This further threatens the national security of the U.S. because even the countrys defense is now in the pass on of the countries that have the likelihood to attack it. change magnitude off shore drilling in the U.S. means increase domestic hand over of might. This is believed to be a way for the U.S. to be independent from foreign oil, hence, ensuring its national security. However, in contrary to this position, some people believe that off shore drilling will not lead to the countrys energy in dependance. Citing the U.S. government data, the country may have 49 billion position of oil in undeveloped reserves that are currently open for drilling. another(prenominal) 19 billion is predicted to be uncommitted in sites where drilling is presently prohibited. Even if the U.S. succeeded to extract all of its possible resources, experts predicted that this would unless increase the U.S. oil p roduction by 1-4 percent. This means that the U.S. will still aver on imported oil even if the countrys resources are altogether exploited. In addition, reliance upon oil as a source of energy itself is not sustainable. Oil is believed to reach its peak production very soon. With all of the known reserves worldwide and at the present global rate of consumption, oil is predicted to run out in 40 years. Some people think that the solution for the U.S. to be energy independent is to stop relying on oil and start investing in election fuels. Finally, the last reason why some people support off shore drilling in the U.S. is that increasing domestic supply of oil will realize the stability and improve the economy of the country. The U.S. dependence on foreign oil, not only threatens the countrys national security, but in like manner threatens the countrys sparing stability. Countries of the Middle East are very hostileand un electrostatic. We should treat an example of the US-Iran c lash. The U.S., which has the power to stop Iran from pursuing power makes for the pursuit of peace in the Middle East, is force to abandon the plans of investing oil in Iran as a threat to Irans economy. This leads to the collision between the U.S. and Iran. As a reprisal, Iran threatens to attack oil shipping in the Persian disconnect and disrupt oil delivery from the gulf to the U.S. Disruption of oil delivery will cause a devastating effect to the U.S economy.Energy independence from troubled Middle East countries is a way to promote a stable economy in the U.S. and some people believe that offshore drilling is a way to reach this goal. In line with economy, offshore drilling is likewise very profitable for the U.S. and it is believed that it can affect the expense of gasoline worldwide. Based on statistics provided by www.api.org, by the year 2035, off shore drilling is estimated to contribute up to $23.5 billion per year to the U.S. economy. Kevin A. Hasett, the director of economic polity studies at the American Enterprise impart for Public Policy Research, stated, by increasing offshore exploration and drilling, the United States would be encouraging oil-producing nations to put more oil in the market now, thereby big(a) damages on the world wide market. accelerator pedal price is the key to economy. If gasoline price goes down, prices of goods throughout the country will also decrease. Consumer sentiment will increase, as people will tend to buy more goods. This will increase the governments revenue, which in turn improves the countrys economy. Furthermore, off shore drilling also provides jobs for Americans and prevents the release of jobs that are already operational. mellowed cost of energy in the U.S. causes many companies to relocate their plants outside of the country. This causes the button of jobs of many Americans who are already working for these companies. On the other hand, as well as the off shore drilling plant itself prov ide jobs, the reduction of oil prices will also attract companies to invest in the U.S. and hence provides more jobs for Americans. However, in opposition to this position, some people believe that off shore drilling will not improve the economy in the U.S. As mentioned previously, even the complete exploitation of all the reserves in the U.S will only increase the U.S. oil production by 1-4 percent. Also, oil prices are largely dictated by worldwide supply and demand. set will only disdain if each one of them increases. Even if the supply is increasing, young statistics show that world oil demand is also increasing very rapidly. Hence, some people believe that off shore drilling in the U.S. would not importantly affect worldwide oil price. In addition, how much oil can really be extracted is not yet guaranteed. exploration and rig construction costs a lot of money and time. Even if off shore drilling will be conducted anytime soon, it will not immediately lower oil price. Accord ing to EIA, any measured changes of price will only be visible until 2030.Despite the increasing of jobs available due to off shore drilling, we should also consider the jobs that are lost and the economic impact to the U.S. when oil spills occur. Oil spills do not only severely damage the environment, but also cause negative impacts on tourism and fishing industries. Oil spills kill thousands of fish and destroy scenic beaches that attract tourists. The Exxon Valdez oil spills cost more than $300 million of economic loss to more than 30000 people whose lives depend on commercial fishing. Also, the oil spills that hit the gulf of Mexico in 2010 cost a loss of $60 billion in tourism industry.Furthermore, we should also consider the cost of retrieval of oil spills. Despite the profits that the country makes on offshore drilling, the cost of recuperation when an oil explosion occurs is much greater. The U.S. exhausted $20 billion fund in response to the spill in the Gulf of Mexic o. The company British Protocol is answerable to fund $56 billion dollars in fines, cleanup costs and settlements. Overall, some people see that expanding offshore drilling is lay the countrys economy at risk instead of improving it.Expanding off shore drilling in the U.S. is a very controversial topic. The government should take into consideration of both opposing sides in advance making decisions whether or not to expand off shore drilling in the U.S. by weighing issues regarding national security, environment and economy. They should seek a sustainable long solution in order to meet the energyneeds of the country in the present and in the future.
