The American Dream can mean a number of different things to number of different people. Over the years this ideal has evolved and its definition will continue to change for many more years to come. What has not changed is the desire to achieve this dream. For decades now, people from all over the world have immigrated to the United States with hopes of obtaining this dream. However it seems that, to many immigrants the American dream has a very different and more modest definition. To many foreigners it means having the basic necessities in life and giving their children opportunities and life they ever had. Immigration can be a good and a bad thing. On one hand the overall standard of living is better but on the other hand it is almost†¦show more content†¦As she recalls back on this time by telling her daughter what she calls her Kweilin story, Suyuan describes her feeling during this horrible time as â€Å"And inside I was no longer hungry for the cabbage or the turnips of the hanging rock garden. I could only see the dripping bowels of an ancient hill that might collapse on top of me. Can you imagine how it is, to want to be neither inside nor outside, to want to be nowhere and disappear?† (22) At this point in her life Suyuan was separated from her husband who is in the military and eventually is forced to abandon her two young daughters. This aspect of Suyuan’s life parallels the life of Amy Tan’s mother. Daisy tan was also married to a military man during the Chinese Civil War and like Suyuan was forced to abandon her two daughters in Shanghai. This was an experience that would affect her mother for the rest of her life and a story she would continue to tell and never forget. The life of Amy Tan is also a parallel to the life of Jing-Mei Woo of â€Å"June†. As a young girl June was forced to play the piano and practice constantly to become the best like Amy Tan was as a child. Along with playing the piano Suyuan also had high expectations for June as far as her future. She wanted her daughter to be the best in her class and go off to medical school to become a well educated doctor, the same expectation’s Amy Tan’s mother had for her. I am a philosophical person by nature who tends to think a lot into life and am impatient with myself for not achieving more. At the same time, I have a love-affair with nature. Possibly the two are combined. I believe that these character traits have influenced the subject of the essays that I have chosen to include in my portfolio. See Robert Frosts the Road less taken for instance. Each and every time I read it, that poem impacts me in different ways and this last time that I read it, it actually gave me the shivers. The road less taken ¦ I see two paths in the yellow wood, one over and again trampled on this may well be the path that I have grown up in, my socialization, the path that my parents/ family/ community may wish me to lead. It is now socially acceptable for people of all races to enjoy the many aspects of hip hop. Hip hop was spurred in the late 70s. The man credited as being the first rapper ever, DJ Afrika Bambataa, was the first to talk to his music. His unorthodox style quickly became very popular in the disco and funk clubs. For the lack of a better word,rap was the term given to the music. As more and more rappers came about, the term MC, or Master of Ceremonies, was associated with rappers. Break dancing actually originated a few years prior to DJ Afrika Bambataa. Break dancers (B-Boys and B-Girls), would dance during the breaks in the music while steady beats were played. Eventually rap and break dancing united and hip hop began. The area in which hip hop first became a popular music was the Bronx. The Bronx is often labeled as the birthplace of hip hop. In its early stages hip hop was mostly a black and hispanic thing. As hip hop has evolved over the past 20 some odd years its n base has dramatically broadened. Not only has its area of influence broadened, but the race and ethnicities of hip hop lovers have also. If you go to a hip hop concert nowadays you will almost always see a mixture of races. Groups such as A Tribe Called Quest, and The Roots welcome this ethnic mixing in their music. On the contrary, most gangster rappers do not promote this mixture. Thpreach about racial tension, therefore further distancing the posibility of tranquility between races. These negative gangster rappers are the problem with hip hop. Dont get me wrong; there is nothing wrong with telling about the injustices and harsh nditons of living in the city, but often it is taken too far. The best hip hop out there is whats called underground. Most rappers are underground at first. Unfortunately underground hip hop is not extremely prosperous. Mainstream artists differ from underground rappers because they are exposed to all of the faand luxuries provided by society. Many underground rappers become frustrated because of the lack of exposure. Too many of the most famous rappers cop out by making music that caters to the mainstream American consumers. All of a sudden they become toh, hard knock thugs; thus the name gangster rappers. This is the image that sells. Gangster rappers lyrics lack substance and meaning. The theme of their music becomes repetitive. All of their songs deal with and only with the following elements: sex, ugs, violence and racism. Mos Def and Talib Kweli are two very talented rappers who have stayed true to their underground roots while gaining stardom in the hip hop world. Their insightful lyrics reflect their intelligence. Their stories reflect everything from the day to day trbles of living in NYC to the troubled state of the world today.
